StartupLounge

Last week, Jason and I attended StartupLounge’s networking event for investors and entrepreneurs to mingle. It was a great event because the setting is very casual and inviting; everyone was very friendly and open to chat with you. Like always, ATDC’s staff like Nina Sawczuk and Blake Patton were very helpful in connecting us to attendees who are also in legal tech or legal industry. We’ve made some great contacts and made some new friends.

We look forward to attend the next StartupLounge!

By the way, Jason and I had a radio interview with Atlanta Business RadioX. Check it out.

TAG Business Launch Competition

Yesterday was the first round of presentation for the TAG Business Launch competition. Jason did a fabulous job presenting Eggplanter. There were 6 judges total with different backgrounds in the panel today. The judges asked some great questions, one of the questions was:

How do we ensure the quality of these cases?

CaseCurrent is an exclusive network. We encourage attorneys connect only to peers whom they trust to do business with. Since reputation is an important element of an attorney’s practice, attorneys would not refer low quality cases to their peers. On CaseCurrent, each user has ultimate control to select and connect with only the best quality people and cases.

Our takeaways from this presentation:

Run your pitch with people who are not familiar with your product or industry. That way you can fine tune your pitch to make sure audiences with different background can clearly understand your product easily.

What are the important key points you want to convey in your presentation? You can either include a slide with 3-4 key points at the beginning and/or at the very end of your slide deck. It will help summarizing your pitch and making it easier for the audience to understand and remember your product.

Focus. Six minutes go by really fast and it is quite challenging to condense everything you want your audience to know into a 6 minute presentation. So, focus on the key points and key messages that you’re audience are most interested.

We feel good about our presentation and hopefully we’ll get into the semi-final!

What’s going on next?

Jason is presenting at Lex.Think.1 of the ABA TECHSHOW today. More updates later

Be Your Own Boss Network (BYOB), a student organization of the Georgia State University College of Law, invited Eggplanter to give a presentation on legal technology and how new technology can help attorneys to build successful law practices.

Through our discussion with students who are interning at solo law firms or small sized law firms, students point out that their employers often face difficulties in practice management. Some solos even considered closing their practices because they’re so drowned in managing the practice; these attorneys don’t have time or resource to screen and accept the large volume of new cases and had to turn away numbers of potential clients. There are many excellent law practice management software that provide great solutions to help attorneys to better manage different every day tasks, yet many firms are still struggling because some software can be too complex for attorneys to invest time to learn all the unnecessary features, or the software is simply not intuitive. Hence, causing inconvenience and stress to attorneys.

A solution should be intuitive, time saving, and efficient which are all important to the success of a law practice, especially to solos and small firms where limited resources are available. Eggplanter believes in solutions that are simple, intuitive, and powerful—solutions that allow attorneys to focus on what they do best, practicing law.

Is the advancement of legal technology helping your firm? Is there any problem in practice management that you would like it to be solved? Share your thoughts.

Attorney willingness to innovate will in large part influence the future of the legal industry. Industry-wide structural changes may fundamentally change the very practice of law. Willingness to innovate and challenge the traditional law practice model will determine the economic viability of many practices. Innovation like this is no small feat. Attorneys face the challenge of balancing the unrealized benefit of innovation and economic cost coupled with its perceived or actual risk (hardhats optional for software upgrades). There’s a reluctance to change a business model when it functions – but nothing more. The dynamism in the legal industry actually makes the transition from a business model that merely functions into one that thrives easier.

The “don’t fix what isn’t broken” attitude leaves much of the potential of legal technology unrealized. Ironically, this attitude is the riskiest decision a law practice could make: not exploring options during a period of industry-wide upheaval. It’s an attitude that pervaded Blockbuster before Netflix outmaneuvered them and rendered their once dominant company (not to mention the entire retail video and game rental business model) obsolete. It’s also one of the reasons LegalZoom captured so much of the middle-market legal consumer market, the bread and butter work of solo practitioners and small firms. Both Netflix and LegalZoom did something while most of their competitors were business as usual. They listened to their customers. Their customers wanted quick, simple to use, and cost-effective services that made them happy by meeting their needs and expectations.

What’s riskier than innovation? The innovators who outmaneuver your business because it functioned and never thrived. In the new legal economy, adequacy simply isn’t good enough.

Hello!

On December 12, 2011, we begin CaseCurrent’s invitation-only beta testing for licensed attorneys currently practicing in Georgia. It is the culmination of months of brainstorming, non-stop work, and the belief that technological innovation can and should empower attorneys and clients alike. We’re just getting started.

So, what is CaseCurrent?

CaseCurrent is an attorney-to-attorney referral and analytics platform where attorneys leverage their networks to generate leads and provide clients with counsel the referring attorney trusts. Attorneys receive referrals based on the networks they build – referrals that are pre-screened by other licensed professionals in their peer groups, not a referral service, with the client’s active participation in the selection process. CaseCurrent also analyzes non-confidential referral data so subscribers understand the business metrics unique to their respective law practices.

CaseCurrent emphasizes best practices and building robust, ethically-grounded professional relationships strengthened through technology. CaseCurrent stands for simple design, data security, and services that deliver measurable value without compromising ethics. We want to empower attorneys and their support staff to save time and grow business by streamlining the referral process and taking the mystery out of legal marketing.

We’re keeping this phase of beta testing exclusive so we can focus on usability and adjust our technology before making it more widely available. If you’d like to participate, just email us. We can’t guarantee you’ll receive access, but we’ll respond to every inquiry. And we appreciate your interest.

Let’s build this together.

Team Eggplanter

NoteSprout is no exception. We want to change how law students work and empower these students to study in ways that work for them. That alone is worth all the labor we’ve invested so far, but there’s still so much we want to accomplish.

Please stay tuned with us on NoteSprout’s development progress!
